Since then, the company has been letting the product limp along with updates to it's creaky old framework. Lightwave's next gen product dubbed "core" failed completely and never came to market. The hobbyist and low end market were taken from them by Blender, while their higher end competitors, Max and Maya, fulled by the marketing and development budget of Autodesk have taken over most the higher end applications and virtually all of the games market. On top of all that Lightwave has virtually no standing in the games industry when compared to Max or Maya, if you take the time to learn Lightwave, you're learning a software you won't use anywhere else at least in the games industry.Īs mentioned before, Lightwave is slowly dying. I jumped off the Lightwave bandwagon way back around version 7.5, and never looked back. Then, those problems just tend to sit around and get worse over time. Also, NewTec has a habit of adding features to Lightwave just so they can say they have them, without any apparent concern for how well those features are implemented, how reliable, or even how suited to real production work they are. ![]() This can make rigging and a number of other tasks a total pain in the rear. It's unbelievable that this far into the game, modeling and animation/rendering are still two separate apps with Lightwave. NewTec, the makers of Lightwave are a small outfit and frequently either don't have the resources to fix problems, or just don't devote those resources to the Lightwave product. First, it's plagued with problems that just never get fixed. I used to use Lightwave, and really wouldn't recommend it at this time for a number of reasons. You would not belive what you all know from television and cinema what is all made with Lightwave. It is by the way not only for basic modeling and animation. I have the feeling they are now back and come with regular updates again.įor sure they had to make the groundwork again so it look like the latest updates are not so good but that had its reasons because Lightwave was an old 3D veteran and has to be rewritten completly.īut now, after they have done it, i hope they come back with again great software. He is also a very good salesmen so i own Modo too The difficultys where from the time when half of the team left them together with Brad Peebler to build a new Software called Modo and they had some hard years to fill the possitions, and rewrite Lightwave to modern code that take some time.īy the way Brad made some many great tutorial videos for Lightwave, i have all of them on VHS So yes, Lightwave is a good modeling and animation software! I think you have to try out some different 3D software to find the one you feel good with and can be payed from you or offered for free. I saw in Lightwave 11 video that you can now exchage between Lightwave and Unity with one button but have not upgraded yet to tell you more about this. Sometimes i also use it together with 3Dcoat and project messiah but the start of a model beginn mostly in Lightwave, that can maybe change now with the new dynamic modeling feature in Zbrush 4R2. In these days i mostly make low poly objects in it that i then bring to Zbrush and from there back to Lightwave for animations and or Rendering. ![]() It is not my only 3D program i bought but i love to work with it since so many years. I still use Lightwave for modeling and animation and also for Unity. If you start doing really well, you can hire a programmer to reprogram Blender to fit your specific needs as Blender is open-sourced and source code is free. I've had problems importing 3DS Max animations, I haven't used Maya, but everything's been okay with Blender for me. Fortunately, there are plenty of tutorials. ![]() Blender does have a learning curve, and has been notorious for being hard to learn. Blender is a powerful open-sourced software that is absolutely free that you can use commerically. Pro versions for both software is somewhere around $3500 USD. The student version is also free, but you can't use it commercially. Maya is generally used for movies, and is great for modeling too. Maya is made by the same company (Autodesk), and has an amazing animation tool. So if you made models in 3DS Max and you wanted to sell your games, you couldn't do it. The student version is free, and it has all the tools that the pro version has, but doesn't you can't use it commercially. Blender (Free open-sourced multipurpose tool, absolutely free)ģDS Max is great for modeling for games and has great animation.
